Captiva Fishing Guide Report: January 25, 2022: Permit, Catch & Release<\/strong>, Captain Joe\u2019s Charters \u2013 no significant Red Tide presence, and a lot of good fish in the gulf, bay, and passes; Sharks, Redfish, Spanish Mackerel, Snook, and Seatrout are currently present.<\/p>\n

Redfish & snook are regulated as catch & release at this time.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Already seeing some positive impact.\u00a0 Some very nice big redfish and big snook around. Trout are also coming back.<\/p>\n

The Caloosahatchee freshwater releases are also not an issue right now, but still a huge long-term problem.<\/p>\n

Extremely frustrating.\u00a0 We need wholesale changes in the Florida state government.\u00a0 It is not a Republican or Democrat issue \u2013 it is a Big Sugar control everyone issue.\u00a0 It is stunning how we continue to let the sugar industry and the agriculture north of Lake Okeechobee to damage the water and all of Florida.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re located in Castaways Marina, Santiva, Sanibel Island, just before the Blind Pass bridge to Captiva Island.<\/p>\n

Turner Beach, the beach adjoining Blind Pass, is frequently covered with a bounty of shells from Olives to Fighting Whelks to the more common Conchs.<\/p>\n

The fishing is also renowned for sharks in the summer, tailing redfish on the bayside flats and snook under and off the Blind Pass bridge. Because Turner Beach faces Westward, the sunsets are spectacular and a popular viewing point for residents and visitors alike.<\/p>\n

“The\u00a0permit<\/b>\u00a0(Trachinotus falcatus<\/i>) is a\u00a0game fish<\/a>\u00a0of the western\u00a0Atlantic Ocean<\/a>\u00a0belonging to the\u00a0family<\/a>\u00a0Carangidae<\/a>. Adults feed on\u00a0crabs<\/a>,\u00a0shrimp<\/a>, and smaller\u00a0fish<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The permit’s genus name,\u00a0Trachinotus<\/i>\u00a0comes from a fusion of the Greek words\u00a0trachys<\/i><\/i>\u00a0(\u03c4\u03c1\u03b1\u03c7\u03cd\u03c2<\/a><\/span>), which means “rough”, and\u00a0noton<\/i><\/i>(\u03bd\u1ff6\u03c4\u03bf\u03bd<\/a><\/span>), meaning “back”.[3]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The\u00a0species<\/a>\u00a0name for the permit,\u00a0falcatus<\/a><\/i><\/i>, is a Latin adjective, which roughly means “armed with\u00a0scythes<\/a>“. This serves as a reference to the permit’s\u00a0dorsal fin<\/a>\u00a0that occasionally protrudes from the water when\u00a0schools<\/a>\u00a0of permit feed near the surface.[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Permits can be distinguished by their elongated\u00a0dorsal fins<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0anal fin<\/a>.[2]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The dorsal fin is shaped like a scythe. Permit tails are also deeply forked, and their bodies are compressed laterally, making the fish tall and thin when viewed from the front.\u00a0[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

The average permit has six to seven dorsal\u00a0spines<\/a>, and 18 to 20 one soft rays. The anal fin has two to three spines, and 16 to 18 soft rays.[4]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Both dorsal and anal fins have dark, anterior\u00a0lobes<\/a>.[5]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Permits have no\u00a0scutes<\/a>\u00a0and have a large, orange-yellow patch on their abdomens in front of their anal fins, while their\u00a0pectoral fins<\/a>\u00a0are dark.[6]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

The permit fish can reach a maximum length of 48 in (122\u00a0cm) and can weigh up to 79\u00a0lb (36\u00a0kg), according to the Florida Museum of Natural History.<\/p>\n

Permit are usually found in shallow, tropical waters such as\u00a0mudflats<\/a>,\u00a0channels<\/a>, and muddy bottoms.[2]<\/a><\/sup>[4]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Although permit are found close to shore and even in some\u00a0brackish<\/a>areas, they spawn offshore.[5]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Young are found usually in the\u00a0surf zone<\/a>\u00a0where plenty of small\u00a0invertebrates<\/a>\u00a0are available for them to eat.<\/p>\n
