Captiva Fishing Guide Report: September 5, 2021: Pufferfish, Catch & Release<\/strong>, Captain Joe\u2019s Charters \u2013 the weather is great – no significant Red Tide presence, and a lot of good fish in the gulf, bay, and passes; Sharks, Redfish, Spanish Mackerel, Snook, and Seatrout are currently present.<\/p>\n

Redfish & snook are regulated as catch & release at this time.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Already seeing some positive impact.\u00a0 Some very nice big redfish and big snook around. Trout are also coming back.<\/p>\n

The Caloosahatchee freshwater releases are also not an issue right now, but still a huge long-term problem.<\/p>\n

Extremely frustrating.\u00a0 We need wholesale changes in the Florida state government.\u00a0 It is not a Republican or Democrat issue \u2013 it is a Big Sugar control everyone issue.\u00a0 It is stunning how we continue to let the sugar industry and the agriculture north of Lake Okeechobee to damage the water and all of Florida.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re located in Castaways Marina, Santiva, Sanibel Island, just before the Blind Pass bridge to Captiva Island.<\/p>\n

“Tetraodontidae<\/b>\u00a0is a\u00a0family<\/a>\u00a0of primarily marine and\u00a0estuarine fish<\/a>\u00a0of the\u00a0order<\/a>\u00a0Tetraodontiformes<\/a>. The family includes many familiar species variously called pufferfish<\/b>,\u00a0puffers<\/b>,\u00a0balloonfish<\/b>,\u00a0blowfish<\/b>,\u00a0blowies<\/b>,\u00a0bubblefish<\/b>,\u00a0globefish<\/b>,\u00a0swellfish<\/b>,\u00a0toadfish<\/b>,\u00a0toadies<\/b>,\u00a0honey toads<\/b>,\u00a0sugar toads<\/b>, and\u00a0sea squab<\/b>.[1]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0They are\u00a0morphologically<\/a>\u00a0similar to the closely related\u00a0porcupinefish<\/a>, which have large external spines (unlike the thinner, hidden spines of the Tetraodontidae, which are only visible when the fish have puffed up). The scientific name refers to the four large teeth, fused into an upper and lower plate, which are used for crushing the hard shells of\u00a0crustaceans<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0mollusks<\/a>, their natural prey.<\/p>\n

The majority of pufferfish species are\u00a0toxic<\/a>\u00a0and some are among the most poisonous\u00a0vertebrates<\/a>\u00a0in the world. In certain species, the internal organs, such as the liver, and sometimes the skin, contain\u00a0tetrodotoxin<\/a>, and are highly toxic to most animals when eaten; nevertheless, the meat of some species is considered a delicacy in\u00a0Japan<\/a>\u00a0(as \u6cb3\u8c5a, pronounced\u00a0fugu<\/a><\/i>),\u00a0Korea<\/a>\u00a0(as \ubcf5 ,bok<\/i>, or \ubcf5\uc5b4,\u00a0bogeo<\/i>), and\u00a0China<\/a>\u00a0(as \u6cb3\u8c5a,\u00a0h\u00e9t\u00fan<\/i>) when prepared by specially trained chefs who know which part is safe to eat and in what quantity. Other pufferfish species with nontoxic flesh, such as the\u00a0northern puffer<\/a>,\u00a0Sphoeroides maculatus<\/i>, of\u00a0Chesapeake Bay<\/a>,[2]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0are considered a delicacy elsewhere.[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

The species\u00a0Torquigener albomaculosus<\/a><\/i>\u00a0was called by\u00a0David Attenborough<\/a>\u00a0“the greatest artist of the animal kingdom” due to the males’ unique habit of wooing females by\u00a0creating nests in sand<\/a>\u00a0composed of complex geometric designs.[4]”<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n
