The family includes many familiar species variously called <b>pufferfish<\/b>,\u00a0<b>puffers<\/b>,\u00a0<b>balloonfish<\/b>,\u00a0<b>blowfish<\/b>,\u00a0<b>blowies<\/b>,\u00a0<b>bubblefish<\/b>,\u00a0<b>globefish<\/b>,\u00a0<b>swellfish<\/b>,\u00a0<b>toadfish<\/b>,\u00a0<b>toadies<\/b>,\u00a0<b>honey toads<\/b>,\u00a0<b>sugar toads<\/b>, and\u00a0<b>sea squab<\/b>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Froese_1-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tetraodontidae#cite_note-Froese-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0They are\u00a0<a title=\"Morphology (biology)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Morphology_(biology)\">morphologically<\/a>\u00a0similar to the closely related\u00a0<a title=\"Porcupinefish\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Porcupinefish\">porcupinefish<\/a>, which have large external spines (unlike the thinner, hidden spines of the Tetraodontidae, which are only visible when the fish have puffed up). The scientific name refers to the four large teeth, fused into an upper and lower plate, which are used for crushing the hard shells of\u00a0<a title=\"Crustacean\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Crustacean\">crustaceans<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Mollusk\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mollusk\">mollusks<\/a>, their natural prey.<\/p>\n<p>The majority of pufferfish species are\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Toxic\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Toxic\">toxic<\/a>\u00a0and some are among the most poisonous\u00a0<a title=\"Vertebrate\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vertebrate\">vertebrates<\/a>\u00a0in the world. In certain species, the internal organs, such as the liver, and sometimes the skin, contain\u00a0<a title=\"Tetrodotoxin\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tetrodotoxin\">tetrodotoxin<\/a>, and are highly toxic to most animals when eaten; nevertheless, the meat of some species is considered a delicacy in\u00a0<a title=\"Japan\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Japan\">Japan<\/a>\u00a0(as \u6cb3\u8c5a, pronounced\u00a0<i><a title=\"Fugu\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fugu\">fugu<\/a><\/i>),\u00a0<a title=\"Korea\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Korea\">Korea<\/a>\u00a0(as \ubcf5 ,<i>bok<\/i>, or \ubcf5\uc5b4,\u00a0<i>bogeo<\/i>), and\u00a0<a title=\"China\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/China\">China<\/a>\u00a0(as \u6cb3\u8c5a,\u00a0<i>h\u00e9t\u00fan<\/i>) when prepared by specially trained chefs who know which part is safe to eat and in what quantity.
