Captiva Fishing Guide Report: Sunday, April 18: Bluefish, Catch & Release<\/strong>, Captain Joe\u2019s Charters \u2013 a lot of good fish have moved back into the gulf, bay and passes; redfish, sheepshead, black drum, snapper, snook, and seatrout are currently present.<\/p>\n

Redfish & snook are regulated as catch & release at this time.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Already seeing some positive impact.\u00a0 Some very nice big redfish and snook around, more big redfish than snook.<\/p>\n

The Caloosahatchee freshwater releases are also not an issue right now, but still a huge long-term problem.<\/p>\n

Extremely frustrating.\u00a0 We need wholesale changes in the Florida state government.\u00a0 It is not a Republican or Democrat issue \u2013 it is a Big Sugar control everyone issue.\u00a0 It is stunning how we continue to let the sugar industry and the agriculture north of Lake Okeechobee to damage the water and all of Florida.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re located in Castaways Marina, Santiva, Sanibel Island, just before the Blind Pass bridge to Captiva Island.<\/p>\n

Turner Beach, the beach adjoining Blind Pass, is frequently covered with a bounty of shells from Olives to Fighting Whelks to the more common Conchs.<\/p>\n

The fishing is also renowned for sharks in the summer, tailing redfish on the bayside flats and snook under and off the Blind Pass bridge. Because Turner Beach faces Westward, the sunsets are spectacular and a popular viewing point for residents and visitors alike.<\/p>\n

The bluefish is a moderately proportioned fish, with a broad, forked tail. The spiny first\u00a0dorsal fin<\/a>\u00a0is normally folded back in a groove, as are its\u00a0pectoral fins<\/a>. Coloration is a grayish blue-green dorsally, fading to white on the lower sides and belly. Its single row of teeth in each jaw is uniform in size, knife-edged, and sharp. Bluefish commonly range in size from seven-inch (18-cm) “snappers” to much larger, sometimes weighing as much as 40\u00a0lb (18\u00a0kg), though fish heavier than 20\u00a0lb (9\u00a0kg) are exceptional.<\/p>\n

Bluefish are widely distributed around the world in tropical and subtropical waters. They are found in\u00a0pelagic<\/a>\u00a0waters on much of the continental shelves along eastern America (though not between south Florida and northern South America), Africa, the Mediterranean and Black Seas (and during migration in between), Southeast Asia, and Australia.<\/p>\n

They are found in a variety of coastal habitats: above the continental shelf, in energetic waters near surf beaches, or by rock headlands.[5]<\/a><\/sup>They also enter\u00a0estuaries<\/a>\u00a0and inhabit\u00a0brackish<\/a>\u00a0waters.[6]<\/a><\/sup>[7]<\/a><\/sup>[8]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Periodically, they leave the coasts and migrate in schools through open waters.[9]<\/a><\/sup>[10]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Along the U.S. East Coast, bluefish are found off\u00a0Florida<\/a>\u00a0in the winter. By April, they have disappeared, heading north. By June, they may be found off\u00a0Massachusetts<\/a>; in years of high abundance, stragglers may be found as far north as\u00a0Nova Scotia<\/a>. By October, they leave the waters north of New York City, heading south (whereas some bluefish, perhaps less migratory,[11]<\/a><\/sup>[12]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0are present in the Gulf of Mexico throughout the year). In a similar pattern overall, the economically significant population that spawns in Europe’s Black Sea migrates south through Istanbul (Bosphorus, Sea of Marmara, Dardanelles, Aegean Sea) and on toward Turkey’s Mediterranean coast in the autumn for the cold season.[13]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Along the South African coast and environs, movement patterns are roughly in parallel.[14]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Adult bluefish are typically between 20 and 60\u00a0cm long, with a maximum reported size of 120\u00a0cm and 14\u00a0kg. They reproduce during spring and summer, and can live up to 9 years.[9]<\/a><\/sup>[10]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Bluefish\u00a0fry<\/a>\u00a0are\u00a0zooplankton<\/a>, and are largely at the mercy of currents.[15]<\/a><\/sup>[16]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Spent bluefish have been found off east-central Florida, migrating north. As with most marine fish, their spawning habits are not well known. In the western side of the North Atlantic, at least two populations occur, separated by\u00a0Cape Hatteras<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0North Carolina<\/a>. The\u00a0Gulf Stream<\/a>\u00a0can carry fry spawned to the south of Cape Hatteras to the north, and eddies can spin off, carrying them into populations found off the coast of the mid-Atlantic, and the\u00a0New England<\/a>\u00a0states.[17]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Adult bluefish are strong and aggressive, and live in loose groups. They are fast swimmers which prey on\u00a0schools<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0forage fish<\/a>, and continue attacking them in\u00a0feeding frenzies<\/a>\u00a0even after they appear to have eaten their fill.[9]<\/a><\/sup>[10]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Depending on area and season, they favor\u00a0menhaden<\/a>\u00a0and other\u00a0sardine<\/a>-like fish (Clupeidae<\/a>), jacks (Scombridae<\/a>),\u00a0weakfish<\/a>\u00a0(Sciaenidae<\/a>), grunts (Haemulidae<\/a>), striped anchovies (Engraulidae<\/a>),\u00a0shrimp<\/a>, and\u00a0squid<\/a>. They are\u00a0cannibalistic<\/a>\u00a0and can destroy their own young.[18]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Bluefish sometimes chase bait through the\u00a0surf zone<\/a>, attacking schools in very shallow water, churning the water like a washing machine. This behavior is sometimes referred to as a “bluefish blitz”.<\/p>\n

In turn, bluefish are preyed upon by larger predators at all stages of their lifecycle. As juveniles, they fall victim to a wide variety of oceanic predators, including striped bass, larger bluefish, fluke (summer flounder), weakfish, tuna, sharks, rays, and dolphins. As adults, bluefish are taken by tuna, sharks, billfish, seals, sea lions, dolphins, porpoises, and many other species.<\/p>\n

Bluefish should be handled with caution due to their ability to snap at unwary hands. Fishermen have been severely bitten, and wearing gloves can help. Wading or swimming among feeding bluefish schools can be dangerous.[19]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In July 2006, a seven-year-old girl was attacked on a beach, near the Spanish town of\u00a0Alicante<\/a>, allegedly by a bluefish.[20]”\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/a><\/sup>Please see more information here.<\/a><\/p>\n
