Captiva Fishing Guide Report: Sunday, March 29, 2020: Very Quiet, Covid-19\u00a0 Days, Photos\/Fish From Earlier This Month, Or Just Jimmy, Alex & Me \u2013 Stay Safe!\u00a0 Atlantic Sharpnose Shark, Catch & Release<\/strong>, Captain Joe\u2019s Charters \u2013 the weather is great \u2013 some early season tarpon around \u2013 no Red Tide presence, and a lot of good fish in the gulf, bay, and passes; Sharks, Redfish, Spanish Mackerel, Snook, and Seatrout are currently present.<\/p>\n

Redfish & snook are regulated as catch & release at this time.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Already seeing some positive impact.\u00a0 Some very nice big redfish and snook around, more big redfish than snook.<\/p>\n

The Caloosahatchee freshwater releases are also not an issue right now, but still a huge long-term problem.<\/p>\n

Extremely frustrating.\u00a0 We need wholesale changes in the Florida state government.\u00a0 It is not a Republican or Democrat issue \u2013 it is a Big Sugar control everyone issue.\u00a0 It is stunning how we continue to let the sugar industry and the agriculture north of Lake Okeechobee to damage the water and all of Florida.<\/p>\n

“The\u00a0Atlantic sharpnose shark<\/b>\u00a0(Rhizoprionodon terraenovae<\/i>) is a\u00a0requiem shark<\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0family<\/a>\u00a0Carcharhinidae, found in the\u00a0subtropical<\/a>\u00a0waters of the northwestern\u00a0Atlantic Ocean<\/a>, between latitudes\u00a043\u00b0N<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a018\u00b0N<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Atlantic sharpnose shark is a small shark in comparison to others. The Atlantic sharpnose shark’s maximum species length is known to be about 110\u2013120\u00a0cm (3.6\u20133.9\u00a0ft). Although its average adult size tends to be about 91.4\u201399\u00a0cm (3.00\u20133.25\u00a0ft).<\/p>\n

Reports exist of these sharks living up to 12 years in the wild. A distinctive feature is that juveniles have black edges on the dorsal and caudal fins.[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Atlantic sharpnose sharks can be found as far north as New Brunswick, Canada, to as far south as the southern Gulf of Mexico. Reports of specimens from Brazil are likely being confused with the Brazilian sharpnose shark.<\/p>\n

Atlantic sharpnose sharks prefer to live in warmer shallow coastal waters. As they are often found in waters less than 10.1\u00a0m (33\u00a0ft) deep. Although Atlantic sharpnose reportedly were found at 280\u00a0m (920\u00a0ft) deep.[2]<\/a><\/sup>[1]<\/a><\/sup>[3]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

The diet of the Atlantic sharpnose sharks mostly consists of bony fish, worms, shrimp, crabs, and mollusks. Commonly consumed fish include\u00a0menhaden<\/a>, eels, silversides, wrasses, jacks, toadfish, and\u00a0filefish<\/a>.[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Atlantic sharpnose sharks are born ranging from a length of 29\u201337\u00a0cm (11\u201315\u00a0in). For the first three months after birth, they grow an average of 5\u00a0cm (2.0\u00a0in) per month. Then, in the winter and spring, the average growth rate decreases to 0.9\u00a0cm (0.35\u00a0in) per month until the shark reaches a length of 60 to 65\u00a0cm (24 to 26\u00a0in), in which the shark’s growth rate increases linearly about 1.3\u00a0cm (0.51\u00a0in) per month for about a year.<\/p>\n

Males mature at the age of 2\u20133 years at a length of 80\u201385\u00a0cm (31\u201333\u00a0in), while females seem to mature at the age of 2.5\u20133.5 years old, at a length around 84\u201389\u00a0cm (33\u201335\u00a0in).[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Female Atlantic sharpnose sharks are\u00a0viviparous<\/a> and tend to have a litter of four to six pups, but litter size may range from one to seven pups, after a gestation period of 10\u201311 months. The pups are usually born at between 29 and 37\u00a0cm (11 and 15\u00a0in) in total length. After a fierce storm, Turner Beach, the beach adjoining the Pass, is frequently covered with a bounty of shells from Olives to Fighting Whelks to the more common Conchs. The fishing is also renowned for sharks in the summer, tailing redfish on the bayside flats and snook under and off the Blind Pass bridge. Because Turner Beach faces Westward, the sunsets are spectacular and a popular viewing point for residents and visitors alike.<\/p>\n
