Tuesday, June 25: Snapper & Grouper, Catch & Release<\/strong>, Captain Joe\u2019s Charters \u2013 the weather is great, no red tide, and a lot of good fish in the gulf, bay, and passes; Tarpon, Sharks, Redfish, Spanish Mackerel, Snapper, Snook, Grouper, and Seatrout are currently present.<\/p>\n

Redfish & snook are regulated as catch & release at this time.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

Already seeing some positive impact.\u00a0 Some very nice big redfish and snook around, more big redfish than snook.<\/p>\n

The Caloosahatchee freshwater releases are also not an issue right now, but still a huge long-term problem.<\/p>\n

Extremely frustrating.\u00a0 We need wholesale changes in the Florida state government.\u00a0 It is not a Republican or Democrat issue \u2013 it is a Big Sugar control everyone issue.\u00a0 It is stunning how we continue to let the sugar industry and the agriculture north of Lake Okeechobee to damage the water and all of Florida.<\/p>\n

We\u2019re located in Castaways Marina, Santiva, Sanibel Island, just before the Blind Pass bridge to Captiva Island.<\/p>\n

Turner Beach, the beach adjoining Blind Pass, is frequently covered with a bounty of shells from Olives to Fighting Whelks to the more common Conchs.<\/p>\n

The fishing is also renowned for sharks in the summer, tailing redfish on the bayside flats and snook under and off the Blind Pass bridge. Because Turner Beach faces Westward, the sunsets are spectacular and a popular viewing point for residents and visitors alike.<\/p>\n

\u201cMycteroperca microlepis<\/b><\/i>\u00a0(the\u00a0gag<\/b>,\u00a0gag grouper<\/b>,\u00a0velvet rockfish<\/b>\u00a0or\u00a0charcoal belly<\/b>) is a species of\u00a0grouper<\/a>\u00a0from warmer parts of the West Atlantic, including the\u00a0Caribbean<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Gulf of Mexico<\/a>. It is a drab, mottled-gray fish lacking the distinguishing features of most other groupers. Its pattern of markings resemble the box-shaped spots of the\u00a0black grouper<\/a>. It lacks the streamer-points on the tail fin that scamp (Mycteroperca phenax<\/a><\/i>) and yellowmouth grouper (M. interstitialis<\/a><\/i>) have, and lacks yellow coloration around the mouth.<\/p>\n

Ten- to 20-pound (5- to 10-kg) fish are common. The world record is 80\u00a0lb 6 oz (36.45\u00a0kg). The gag grouper is a bottom feeder and is often caught by fishermen seeking bottom-dwelling species, such as\u00a0snappers<\/a>. Its flaky white meat is considered quite delicious.<\/p>\n

Members of this species are known to be\u00a0protogynous hermaphrodites<\/a>, schooling in harems with the most aggressive and largest females shifting sex to male, probably as a result of behavioral triggers, when no male is available. Commercial and sport fishing have created tremendous selective pressures against the largest animals, typically male, restricting the reproductive capacity of the entire breeding population.<\/p>\n

Recently, a small closure in the Gulf of Mexico was established to provide this and other species a refuge from commercial\u00a0fishing pressure<\/a>, however, these data are highly in dispute and are currently being challenged for inaccuracies.
