Captiva Fishing Guide Report: Friday, July 27: Blacktip Sharks,\u00a0Inshore<\/strong>, Captain Joe’s Charters; red tide impact much reduced; Caloosahatchee freshwater releases still a big problem;\u00a0red tide impact has lessened offshore of Boca Grande Pass <\/a>and Cayo Costa beaches,<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>but still a lot of dead fish and on Boca Grande and Cayo Costa beaches from the red tide.<\/p>\n

Really frustrating.\u00a0 We need wholesale changes in Florida state government.\u00a0 It is not a Republican or Democrat issue – it is a Big Sugar control everyone issue.\u00a0 It is stunning how we continue to let the sugar industry and the agriculture north of Lake Okeechobee to damage the water and all of Florida.<\/p>\n

It is common to coastal tropical and subtropical waters around the world, including\u00a0brackish<\/a>\u00a0habitats.\u00a0Genetic analyses<\/a>\u00a0have revealed substantial variation within this species, with populations from the western\u00a0Atlantic Ocean<\/a>\u00a0isolated and distinct from those in the rest of its range.<\/p>\n

The blacktip shark has a stout,\u00a0fusiform<\/a>\u00a0body with a pointed snout, long\u00a0gill slits<\/a>, and no ridge between the\u00a0dorsal fins<\/a>. Most individuals have black tips or edges on the\u00a0pectoral<\/a>, dorsal,\u00a0pelvic<\/a>, and\u00a0caudal fins<\/a>. It usually attains a length of 1.5\u00a0m (4.9\u00a0ft).<\/p>\n

Swift, energetic\u00a0piscivores<\/a>, blacktip sharks are known to make spinning leaps out of the water while attacking schools of small fish. Their demeanor has been described as “timid” compared to other large requiem sharks. Both juveniles and adults form groups of varying size. Like other members of its family, the blacktip shark is\u00a0viviparous<\/a>; females bear one to 10 pups every other year.<\/p>\n

Young blacktip sharks spend the first months of their lives in shallow nurseries, and grown females return to the nurseries where they were born to give birth themselves. In the absence of males, females are also capable of\u00a0asexual reproduction<\/a>.<\/p>\n

This species is of importance to both\u00a0commercial<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0recreational fisheries<\/a>\u00a0across many parts of its range, with its meat, skin, fins, and liver oil used.
