A member of the family\u00a0Carcharhinidae, lemon sharks can grow to 3.4 meters (11\u00a0ft) in length. They are often found in shallow\u00a0subtropical\u00a0waters and are known to inhabit and return to specific nursery sites for breeding. Often feeding at night, these sharks use\u00a0electroreceptors\u00a0to find their main source of prey: fish. Lemon sharks enjoy the many benefits of group living such as enhanced communication,\u00a0courtship,\u00a0predatory\u00a0behavior, and protection. This species of shark gives birth to\u00a0live young, and the females are\u00a0polyandrous\u00a0and have a\u00a0biennial\u00a0reproductive cycle. [File Photo &#8211; Jacob Spencer, Fall, 2016]<\/figcaption><\/figure>The shark&#8217;s yellow coloring serves as a perfect\u00a0<a title=\"Camouflage\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Camouflage\">camouflage<\/a>\u00a0when swimming over the sandy seafloor in its coastal habitat.<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lemon_shark#cite_note-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The lemon shark commonly attains a length of 2.4 to 3.1\u00a0m (7.9 to 10.2\u00a0ft) and a weight up to 90\u00a0kg (200\u00a0lb) by adulthood, although sexual maturity is attained at 2.24\u00a0m (7.3\u00a0ft) in males and 2.4\u00a0m (7.9\u00a0ft) in females.<sup id=\"cite_ref-ufl_4-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lemon_shark#cite_note-ufl-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The maximum recorded length and weight is 3.43\u00a0m (11.3\u00a0ft) and 183.7\u00a0kg (405\u00a0lb), respectively.<sup id=\"cite_ref-fishbase_5-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lemon_shark#cite_note-fishbase-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0It has a flattened head with a short, broad\u00a0<a title=\"Snout\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Snout\">snout<\/a>, and the second\u00a0<a title=\"Dorsal fin\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dorsal_fin\">dorsal fin<\/a>\u00a0is almost as large as the first. The fishing is also renowned with sharks in the summer, tailing redfish on the bayside flats and snook under and off the Blind Pass bridge.
