It is one of the biggest coastal sharks in the world and is closely related to the\u00a0<a title=\"Dusky shark\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dusky_shark\">dusky shark<\/a>, the\u00a0<a title=\"Bignose shark\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bignose_shark\">bignose shark<\/a>, and the\u00a0<a title=\"Bull shark\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bull_shark\">bull shark<\/a>. Its\u00a0<a title=\"Dorsal fin\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dorsal_fin\">dorsal fin<\/a>\u00a0is triangular and very high and it has very long\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Pectoral fins\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pectoral_fins\">pectoral fins<\/a>. Its second dorsal fin and\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Anal fin\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anal_fin\">anal fin<\/a>\u00a0are close to the same height. Females reach sexual maturity around the age of 13 with an average fork-length (tip of the nose to fork in the tail) of 154.9\u00a0cm, while males tend to reach maturity around age 12 with an average fork-length of 151.6\u00a0cm.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Southeast_U.S._3-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sandbar_shark#cite_note-Southeast_U.S.-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Females can grow to 2\u20132.5\u00a0m (6.6\u20138.2\u00a0ft), males up to 1.8\u00a0m (5.9\u00a0ft). Its body color can vary from a bluish to a brownish grey to a bronze, with a white or pale underside. In 2008, the\u00a0<a title=\"National Marine Fisheries Service\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Marine_Fisheries_Service\">National Marine Fisheries Service<\/a>\u00a0banned all commercial landings of sandbar sharks based on a 2006 stock assessment by\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"SEDAR\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/SEDAR\">SEDAR<\/a>, and sandbar sharks were listed as vulnerable, due to overfishing.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, there are a small number of specially permitted vessels fishing for sandbars sharks for the purpose of scientific research. The fishing is also renowned for sharks in the summer, tailing redfish on the bayside flats and snook under and off the Blind Pass bridge.
