The barracuda is a saltwater <a title=\"Fish\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fish\">fish<\/a> of the <a title=\"Genus\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Genus\">genus<\/a> <i><b>Sphyraena<\/b><\/i>, the only genus in the family Sphyraenidae which was named by <a title=\"Constantine Samuel Rafinesque\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Constantine_Samuel_Rafinesque\">Constantine Samuel Rafinesque<\/a> in 1815.<sup id=\"cite_ref-WoRMS_2-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barracuda#cite_note-WoRMS-2\">[2]<\/a><\/sup> and is found in tropical and subtropical oceans worldwide ranging from the Eastern border of the <a title=\"Atlantic Ocean\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atlantic_Ocean\">Atlantic Ocean<\/a> to the <a title=\"Red Sea\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Red_Sea\">Red Sea<\/a> and <a title=\"Caribbean Sea\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Caribbean_Sea\">the Caribbean Sea<\/a>. They have large, pointed heads with an underbite in many species. Their gill covers have no spines and are covered with small <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Scale (zoology)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scale_(zoology)\">scales<\/a>. Their two <a title=\"Dorsal fin\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dorsal_fin\">dorsal fins<\/a> are widely separated, with the anterior fin having five spines, and the posterior fin having one spine and 9 soft rays. The posterior dorsal fin is similar in size to the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Anal fin\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anal_fin\">anal fin<\/a> and is situated above it. The <a title=\"Lateral line\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lateral_line\">lateral line<\/a> is prominent and extends straight from head to tail. The spinous dorsal fin is placed above the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Pelvic fin\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pelvic_fin\">pelvic fins<\/a> and is normally retracted in a groove. The <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Caudal fin\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Caudal_fin\">caudal fin<\/a> is moderately forked with its posterior edged double-curved and is set at the end of a stout <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Caudal peduncle\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Caudal_peduncle\">peduncle<\/a>. The <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Pectoral fins\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pectoral_fins\">pectoral fins<\/a> are placed low on the sides. Coloration varies somewhat between species. For some species, irregular and unorganized black spots or a row of darker cross-bars occur on each side. Their fins may be yellowish or dusky. Other barracuda species are found around the world. Barracudas prey primarily on fish (which may include some as large as themselves). They kill and consume larger prey by tearing chunks of flesh. Barracudas are scavengers and may mistake snorkellers for large predators, following them hoping to eat the remains of their prey. Swimmers have reported being bitten by barracuda, but such incidents are rare and possibly caused by poor visibility. Large barracudas can be encountered in muddy shallows on rare occasion.
