There is a well-developed flap of skin in front of each <a title=\"Nostril\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nostril\">nostril<\/a>, defining the inflow and outflow openings. Twelve to 13 and 11 to 12 tooth rows occur on either side of the upper and lower jaws, respectively, with one or two teeth at the <a title=\"Symphysis\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Symphysis\">symphysis<\/a> (middle). The teeth are triangular and oblique, with serrated edges; the upper teeth are stouter than the lower teeth. The five pairs of <a title=\"Gill slit\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gill_slit\">gill slits<\/a> are short, measuring less a third the length of the first dorsal fin base.<sup id=\"cite_ref-bester_6-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blacknose_shark#cite_note-bester-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-mceachran_and_fechhelm_8-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blacknose_shark#cite_note-mceachran_and_fechhelm-8\">[8]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The first dorsal fin is small and somewhat sickle-shaped, with a pointed apex and a short, free, rear tip; its origin lies over the free rear tips of the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Pectoral fin\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pectoral_fin\">pectoral fins<\/a>. The second dorsal fin is relatively large, though still less than half the height of the first. The pectoral fins are short and tapered.<sup id=\"cite_ref-mceachran_and_fechhelm_8-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blacknose_shark#cite_note-mceachran_and_fechhelm-8\">[8]<\/a><\/sup> The body is covered with overlapping <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Dermal denticle\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dermal_denticle\">dermal denticles<\/a> that bear five to seven longitudinal ridges (three in very young individuals) leading to three to five marginal teeth.<sup id=\"cite_ref-bester_6-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blacknose_shark#cite_note-bester-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup> The coloration is yellowish to greenish-gray or brown above and white to yellow below. A distinctive dark blotch at the tip of the snout is most obvious in young sharks. The tips of the second dorsal fin, upper <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Caudal fin\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Caudal_fin\">caudal fin<\/a> lobe, and sometimes the lower caudal fin lobe, are dark. Captiva Islands &amp; Fort Myers Charters &amp; Fishing Guide Service.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A small, fast-swimming predator, the blacknose shark feeds primarily on small, bony fishes, including <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Pinfish\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pinfish\">pinfish<\/a>, <a title=\"Sciaenidae\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sciaenidae\">croakers<\/a>, <a title=\"Sparidae\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sparidae\">porgies<\/a>, <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Anchovies\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anchovies\">anchovies<\/a>, <a title=\"Ostraciidae\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ostraciidae\">spiny boxfish<\/a>, and <a title=\"Porcupinefish\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Porcupinefish\">porcupinefish<\/a>, as well as on <a title=\"Octopus\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Octopus\">octopus<\/a> and other cephalopods.<sup id=\"cite_ref-bester_6-3\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blacknose_shark#cite_note-bester-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup> When competing for bait, their speed allows them to snatch food from larger sharks such as the <a title=\"Caribbean reef shark\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Caribbean_reef_shark\">Caribbean reef shark<\/a> (<i>C. perezi<\/i>).<sup id=\"cite_ref-10\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blacknose_shark#cite_note-10\">[10]<\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-11\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blacknose_shark#cite_note-11\">[11]<\/a><\/sup> This species may form large <a title=\"Shoaling and schooling\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shoaling_and_schooling\">schools<\/a> that are sometimes associated with anchovies and <a title=\"Mullet (fish)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mullet_(fish)\">mullet<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-bester_6-4\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blacknose_shark#cite_note-bester-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup> Blacknose sharks demonstrate a high degree of <a title=\"Philopatry\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philopatry\">philopatry<\/a>: both juveniles and adults have been documented returning to the same local area year after year.<sup id=\"cite_ref-12\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blacknose_shark#cite_note-12\">[12]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10016\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10016\" style=\"width: 2048px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.captivafishing.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Blacknose-Shark-6-28-16-e1467236542730.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10016\" src=\"http:\/\/www.captivafishing.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/Blacknose-Shark-6-28-16-e1467236542730.jpg\" alt=\"More Blacknose Sharks, Catch &amp;
